On May 27, 2007, the government of Venezuela shut down that nation's most popular TV station by not renewing RCTV’s broadcast license. On July 16, 2007, RCTV started broadcasting through cable and satellite service providers, as RCTV International (RCTV-I). On January 23, 2010, RCTV failed to air a speech by President Chávez and that same day the government publicly called on the cable and satellite operating companies to take RCTV-I, along with other five channels off the air. The order was enforced that Saturday at midnight. Thank you for visiting this site, a project of the Human Rights Foundation. It is now a site devoted to the protection of freedom of expression and will serve to memorialize the shutdown of RCTV. We invite you to raise your voice against censorship!

HRF commemorates freedom of expression by releasing a song recorded by the Afro-Celtic-Yiddish-ska band The Fenwicks, in honor of RCTV and journalists everywhere who resist censorship.
